Why Guys Worry About Summer Beards
These guys make a ritual out of shaving every summer out of fear of the heat. It makes sense. I mean, when you think about it the idea of having a massive patch of fur covering half of your face would sound like a great way to make the most out of the summer heat.
Well, the fear is pretty much completely unfounded. The misconception is founded on a false assumption: The idea that the beard somehow warms your face. In reality, the Beard acts much more like a shield that a heater. The idea that the Beard makes the face warmer is probably based on the effect that is felt in the winter - the same shielding effect that is experienced as warmth in the cold winter weather.
Don't worry about your summer beard - we all have one!
To understand this better, think of the Beard like a patch of bushes. In the winter time, crawling under a bush is a great way to escape the elements - which is exactly what all kinds of different animals do. Now think of that same patch of bushes in the summer, in the screaming-ass heat.
Nice and cool under there right? In addition to this simple concept, scientists in Australia actually found that the Beard can block up to 95% of UV rays from the sun - which can prevent freakin skin cancer.
The Beard does also act as an evaporative cooler as well, as sweat from the skin evaporates and creates a flow of air out of the Beard which has a cooling effect. Combined with the shielding effect of the Beard, this can keep you even cooler than not having a Beard at all!
The real x-factor here is that the idea of “hot” and “cool” are just relative, subjective terms that are different for everyone.
The main point here is that the Beard will in no way make you suffer MORE in the heat.
So put the razors down fellas. The whole idea of shaving the Beard because of heat is bogus - and for the most part just an easy excuse to shave. Get out there, enjoy the summer, and remember that if you are sweating your ass off you would be without the Beard also.
And you wouldn’t be nearly as cool.
