Moustache Waxes

Mustache wax is used to groom and shape mustaches, and it helps to keep the hair in place all day long. As guys we already spend so much time on grooming each day, why not take a few extra minutes with a little wax for our mustaches?

Different types of mustache waxes

You might think that the only way to get a great-looking mustache is by shaving it off. But there's much more you can do, including using mustache wax. Moustache waxes are made with natural ingredients and help keep mustaches looking neat all day long. They come in different types and flavors so you'll be able to find one that suits your needs perfectly!

What is Mustache Wax?

Mustache wax is a substance used to shape mustaches and other types of facial hair. It typically contains beeswax, petrolatum, lanolin, or any combination thereof.

It is applied while a mustache is wet and stiff, before it dries completely.

In the late 19th century, under influence from the military fashion for handlebar mustaches, many commercial mustaches were advertised as being "prepared" in this way to be used with mustache wax. Mustache wax was also used by some men to shape their sideburns, furthering the "handlebar" appearance.

Sebastian LeBlanc, a pseudonym for Major Thomas Lipsius of the Imperial German Army, wrote an article titled "How to Handle a Mustache" in 1902 that explicitly recommends using petroleum jelly as mustache wax and includes instructions on how to use it. A similar set of instructions is given by Colonel Charles E. Woodruff in his 1905 book, titled "How to Look Well", where he recommends using petroleum jelly for the purpose.

The website The Art of Manliness holds mustache wax as a necessity for any man with facial hair. For those who find that their preferred wax does not provide desired results, they have a list of four other waxes that are recommended.

How to Use Mustache Wax

Mustache wax is used to keep mustache hair stiff and in place. Beeswax, petrolatum, or lanolin can be used to make mustaches appear more groomed. Mustache wax is applied while the mustache is wet and still stiff before it dries completely.

Many men use mustaches for military fashion that involves handlebar mustaches. Mustache wax was also used by some men to shape their sideburns for the appearance of a handlebar mustache.

Colonel Charles E. Woodruff wrote an article titled "How to Look Well" that suggests using petroleum jelly for the purpose of mustache wax. He explains how to apply this product, saying "First rub it well into the stiff hairs with a little brush and then comb or brush them down and shape them at will."

A similar set of instructions is given by Major Thomas Lipsius in an 1899 article titled "How to Handle a Mustache" that was written for the Imperial German Army.
